SKILL 7: LISTEN FOR NEGATIVE EXPRESSIONS


This make befuddled us, yet the essential thing here is to realize that the appropriate response won't be negative, in spite of the fact that in the discussion we hear negative articulations.
Example

(man) How did they get to their grandmother’s house in Matine in only five hours?

(woman) They didn’t drive slowly on the trip to Maine.

(narrator) What does the woman say about the trip?

Possible answers:

(A)   They drove rather quickly.
(B)   They couldn’t have driven more slowly.
(C)   They wanted to travel slowly to Maine.
(D)   They didn’t drive to Maine.


The correct answer is answer (A). If they did not drive slowly to Maine, this means that they drove rather quickly.  Notice that the correct answer uses quickly, the opposite of slowly. The answers that use slowly are not correct.

SKILL 6: LISTEN FOR WHO AND WHAT WITH MULTIPLE NOUNS


Once in a while we can be befuddled when we are in this segment or with this expertise, yet we need to give careful consideration to the things we tune in the discussion, can be close to home pronouns or just things, additionally the appropriate response will depend of the inquiry.
EXERCISE 6:

1.       (man) : Why is Bill not at work this week?
     (woman) : His doctor made him take a week off
    (narrator) : What does the woman mean?

    (A)  The doctor decided to take some time off from work.
    (B)  The doctor told Bill he wasn't too weak to work.
    (C)  Bill was mad when  the doctor took some time off
    (D)  Bill took a vacation on his doctor's orders.


Analysis:
·         In the conversation,the woman says " His doctor made him take a week off".
·         The best answer is (D), "Billl took a vacation on his doctor's order"

SKILL 5: LISTEN FOR WHO AND WHAT IN PASSIVE


In this skill we will figure out how to distinguish the passive voice in the discussion.

1. (Woman)  : Alice needs to pay her tuition today.
        (Man)   : But her tuition has already been  paid.
    (Narrator) : What does the man imply?

    (A) Alice's education has been paid
    (B) Alice's tuition needs to be paid
    (C) Alice has already paid her fees.
    (D) Alice has already received the money


    Analysis:
The man uses passive sentence "....has already been paid.". It means that the answer is in active sentence.
The best answer is (C): Alice has already paid her fees. It expresses the same idea.

SKILL 4: DRAW CONCLUSION ABOUT WHO, WHAT WHERE


This expertise tells us who the individual in the discussion is, the place this discussion happens and what this discussion is about, the appropriate response will depend of the inquiry.
Example:

On the recording, you hear:

(woman)   Are you going to read those books here in the library?
(man)       I think I'd rather check them out now and take them home.
(narrator) What will the man probably do next?

In your test book, you hear:

(A) Sit down in the library
(B) Look for some more books
(C) Return the books to the shelves
(D) Go to the circulation desk


Analysis:
The man says that he would check the books out now. Since the circulation desk is where you go to check books out from a library, the man will probably go to the circulation desk next. Therefore the correct answer is (D).
A final type of conclusion that is common in Listening Part A is to determine where the conversation probably take place, based on clues given in the conversation.

SKILL 3: AVOID SIMILAR SOUNDS


At times we feel befuddle when we listen a word that has a comparable sound with others, so in this aptitude we should figure out how to maintain a strategic distance from this comparable sounds keeping in mind the end goal to find the right solution.
Example:

On the recording you hear.

    (man)  : Why couldn't Mark come with us?
(woman) : He was searching for a new apartment.
    (man) : What does the woman say about Mark?


In your test book, you read:

(A) He was in the apartment office.
(B) He was looking for a place to live
(C) He was working on his research project
(D) He had an appointment at church

Analysis:
The key words in the second line of the conversation are searching and apartment.
The answer (C) and (D) the words  research and church sound like search, so these answers are incorrect. in answers (A) and (D), the words department and appointment sound like  apartment, the these answers are incorrect.

The best answer is (B).

SKILL 2 CHOOSE ANSWERS WITH SYNONYMS

This ability transmits us the concept that if we apprehend that are the synonyms of the phrases will be easy for us to comprehend what the feasible answer can be.
Example:                                                         Possible answers

(woman) why is Ana feeling so good?     A) she always liked her work
                                                                          in real states
(man) she just started working in                B) She began a new job
           a real state agency                           C) She just bought some real state                     

(Narrator) what does the man mean?          D) She bought a real state agency

As you can see the equivalent words for the verbs began and working in this discussion are started and work. In this way the best response to the inquiry what does the man mean? Is B "she started another activity".

SKILL 1 FOCUS ON THE SECOND LINE



This skill explean us that answer most of the time is going to appear in the second voice or in the second speaker, so we must be ready to understand at least the second line.


Example:



(Man) That exam was just awful.
(Woman) Oh, it could have been worse.
(Narrator) What does the woman mean?

POSSIBLE ANSWER:

A.      The exam was really awful.
B.      It was worst exam she had ever seen.
C.      It could not have been more difficult
D.      It was not that hard.

We learn from the conversation that the man thought the exam was very difficult and the woman disagreed with the man. The best answer to the question, “What does the woman mean?” is D, “it was not that hard.” Thus, the correct choice is (D).

LISTENING TOEFL TEST
